Today, Thursday, members of the European Parliament called on Tunisian President Kais Syed to end the crackdown on civil society, release all those arbitrarily detained and stop European Union support programs aimed at the ministries of justice and the interior.
In a statement issued after a session on the human rights situation in Tunisia, Iran and Cambodia, the European Parliament expressed its deep concern over President Kais Syed’s authoritarian tendencies and his use of the country’s catastrophic socio-economic situation to overthrow Tunisia’s historic democratic transition.
He demanded the release of detainees, including journalists, judges, lawyers, political activists and trade unionists, as well as respect for freedom of speech, association and workers’ rights, in accordance with the Tunisian constitution and international treaties.
